Sleeve Gastrectomy

Gastric sleeve surgery, or vertical sleeve gastrectomy, is one of the newer types of bariatric surgery. This surgery can also be referred to medically as gastric sleeve resection, sleeve gastrectomy, tube gastrectomy or laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy.

It has been performed in Turkey over the last 10 years, and has now become the most commonly performed weight loss procedure in Turkey and all around the world.

Why Sleeve Gastrectomy?

For people who are either extremely obese or have health problems that make them ineligible for sleeve gastrectomy surgery, This procedure is an option to help them start losing weight.

Unlike the gastric band procedure which requires adjustments every 4-6 weeks following surgery, there are no adjustments required following sleeve gastrectomy. Because there is no prosthetic device involved with the sleeve gastrectomy, the long term risks associated with this procedure are fewer than the other procedures.

After sleeve gastrectomy surgery in Turkey, patients can enjoy a fuller variety of food than they would do following gastric banding. It seems to be the best surgery for weight loss.

Patients will lose on average 70% of their excess weight following sleeve gastrectomy. This weight loss tends to occur in the first 9-12 months following surgery.

The procedure is performed laparoscopically through 5 small incision, so patients have less pain, fewer respiratory complications post operatively, and they recover faster.

Hospital Period

Sleeve Gastrectomy operation in Turkish clinics involve staying in the hospital for 2-3 days. Patients get general anesthesia for the operation.

The abdomen is often swollen and sore for several days. Your surgeon may prescribe pain medication for the discomfort.

Following surgery, you will need to become re-accustomed to eating solid foods. Normally this involves two weeks on a liquid-only diet, and another two weeks on semi-solid and pureed foods before being able to eat solid foods.

As far as weight loss goes, most people who have gastric sleeve surgery lose 50 to 80 percent of their excess body weight over the first six months to one year after surgery. Studies have shown that after the gastric sleeve resection procedure people show improvement in diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol and sleep apnea within one to two years. These improvements are significant compared with those seen after other weight loss surgeries.
